Frequently Asked Questions
Our Houston, TX physical therapy service was designed to empower you to take control of your pelvic health. We know that getting started can be overwhelming, so we’ve answered some of the common questions we get from clients below.
Do you have a Houston, TX physical therapy office?
We have three locations:
Our office at 4909 Bissonnet St, Suite 115; Bellaire TX 77401. We are located in the southeast corner just off of Rice and Bissonnet, in the building named “Local Office.” In true Houston fashion, next to EZ Pawn- one day we will get zoning . . . .
Our new permanent satellite location is opening June 1, 2023 at 26602 Keith Street, Spring, TX 77373. We look forward to serving the Spring, Woodlands, Conroe, Humble, Magnolia and Tomball neighborhoods!
Our third office is wherever you need us to go in Houston! We know that when you’re balancing a career, family and other obligations, taking care of yourself often falls to the bottom of the list. That’s why we offer in-home pelvic floor physical therapy services that empower you to take control of your pelvic health.
Where will my evaluation and pelvic floor treatment take place?
Most of our patients come to our office for their physical therapy treatments and evaluations. But if you want a home visit? You got it! We offer central Houston, TX physical therapy to patients in Meyerland, Bellaire, The Heights, Midtown, Galleria, West University, Downtown and more! Our new permanent satellite location opens June 1, 2023 to offer Spring, TX pelvic floor physical therapy services to patients in Spring, Woodlands, Conroe, Humble, Magnolia and Tomball. Live outside these Houston neighborhoods? Ask us about our travel options!
Do you take insurance for physical therapy?
Currently, Empower Yourself PT is not an in-network provider. This way we are able to focus on your personal goals, not just insurance-directed goals and outcomes. We do take HSAs and FSAs. Sessions in-clinic are $175-225/hour and $450/ hour in-home with a possible travel fee based on your distance from Houston. Please contact us to discuss pelvic floor therapy pricing - we are here to work with you and want to help you! We will provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement.
Why do I need a referral for pelvic floor PT?
The Texas Physical Therapy Practice Act and Laws state that physical therapists only have 10 days of direct access, after that we are required to have a referral. Thus we ask you, as the patient, to help us stay compliant! You can get a referral from your ob, midwife, any other MD, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Chiropractor etc. If you have concerns on being able to get a referral in time just reach out to us and we can help you with that.
What if I am not comfortable with an internal pelvic floor exam?
First, don’t worry, this discomfort is totally normal! Fortunately, a lot of pelvic problems can be initially assessed, diagnosed, and treated externally. The internal examination provides your physical therapist with more detailed information about your condition and offers additional treatment options. The internal exam is completely optional and not required, though strongly recommended - but if for whatever reason you don’t want to do it, then just say so!
What pelvic floor conditions do you treat?
Whether you need prenatal care, postpartum care, diastasis recti repair, struggle with incontinence or pelvic pain or need a pelvic floor specialist to help diagnose and treat pelvic dysfunction, we can help! We work with patients to strengthen their pelvic muscles during sessions and with pelvic floor exercises at home.
How often will I require pelvic floor treatment?
This can vary from person to person and can even change throughout your plan of care. For more complex issues, successful treatment may require you to be seen more frequently at first (1x/week) and can taper down to less frequent visits as you improve and are more independent with your home program. Less complex issues will not require consistent visits and can be spaced out every few weeks. Our goal is to empower you to take care of yourself, that way you will no longer need us.
Can I still be evaluated for pelvic floor issues while pregnant? Pregnant with ACTIVITY restrictions?
While there are many activities that one can be restricted from during pregnancy, physical therapy treatment for pelvic problems does not typically interfere with this. Particularly if you are in discomfort, pelvic physical therapy can help ease your pain while on bed rest or activity restrictions.
I don’t have any current pelvic floor issues, how can PT help prevent common pregnancy-related issues?
Being proactive and having your pelvis assessed can actually aid in smoother labor and deliveries and decrease your risk of developing pelvic health issues in the future. In our prenatal assessment, you and your physical therapist will develop a plan, and home program to assist in your delivery. This includes perineal massage, pelvic floor optimization (strengthening/down training), and core strengthening and stabilization.
I am having trouble finding child care, can I still participate?
Having babies is what we are all about! Many times children are the root of our issues (lifting, carrying, breastfeeding, etc) so having your baby present at your physical therapy appointment can aid in your recovery - let’s practice how to properly lift your baby! Our mission is to do better for women, which includes allowing accessibility to healthcare when it is necessary, not when you are able to find a babysitter. So if you need to, bring your kiddos!
