Why does my tailbone hurt?!
“My tailbone hurts right here-” the patient is pointing to either their anus or just above it, sort of where their underwear covers. I hear this all. the. time.
Tailbone pain is this elusive weird thing- most providers don’t really know what do with it, or how to treat it. People end up going for a lot of imaging ( think x-rays and MRIs) with minimal to no findings- or worse they hear their coccyx is crooked and needs to be removed!
Crazy, right?! The coccyx is actually pretty darn complex, it attaches to the sacrum at the bottom of the spine and also connects to the pelvic floor muscles and other ligaments/ tendons.
Thus, it is NOT surprising that a pelvic floor physical therapist may be the answer to your problems!
As pelvic floor PTs we have the unique ability to assess:
The movement and position of the coccyx in sitting, standing, AS you go from sit to stand/ stand to sit
What is the pelvic floor doing and is it contributing?
What is the spine doing and how is your posture at play? Could this be creating neural tension?
Could the driver be the hamstrings or butt gripping?
Deep breaths. This is almost always 100% treatable, call us at Empower Yourself PT and we can help you get to the root of the cause, treat you, and empower you to continue living your best life!
