How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy helps manage Constipation

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a great way to holistically manage constipation!

And it affects at least 1 in 3 people, so listen up people! Technically, we define constipation as someone having: fewer than three bowel movements per week, passing hard or dry stool, feeling the need to strain during bowel movements, or feeling like the bowels aren't completely empty after passing stool.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can be incredibly beneficial for managing constipation. The pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in bowel movements, and when they're not functioning optimally, it can contribute to constipation issues.

Here's how pelvic floor physical therapy can help you improve your constipation:

  1. Decreasing pelvic floor muscle tension: Tense pelvic floor muscles can make it difficult to have regular bowel movements because the muscle needs to stretch to allow the passage of poop!  Physical therapy techniques, such as relaxation exercises and stretches, can help relax these muscles, making it easier to pass stool.

  2. Exercises to help your motility!  Mobility begets motility! There are certain movement sequences to help stimulate gut motility.

  3. Abdominal massage: We will teach you the technique and perform it! Stimulating gut motility is huge!

  4. Pelvic floor based education and lifestyle changes: Physical therapists can provide guidance on dietary changes, proper toileting posture, and other lifestyle adjustments that can aid in managing constipation.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a great adjunct to managing constipation and even your general health.  Have questions? Reach out to our Houston office at info@empoweryourselfpt.com or call at 832-462-1152!
